The Best Places In Southwest Florida To Fish This is for those that go to Florida to get out of the cold and to fish for bass. First, let me tell you a secret.......if you want more of a chance to catch a trophy size bass..10 pounds plus, try live shiners. For those like me, who wouldn't use a live bait even for a 20 pound bass then read on. The Big T Take Golden Gate Parkway to the end (going East) and turn left, go to Golden Gate Blvd. and turn right. Take Golden Gate Blvd to Everglades Blvd and turn right again. Take Everglades Blvd almost to the end and you'll see a primitive boat ramp on your left and usually some people fishing or camping. (about 8-10 miles from turning on this road) Once you're in the water and heading out go to the right and fish that canal. I have caught some nice bass here using Zoom chartruese pepper lizard, Charlie's Twitchin Shad, salt and pepper and Berkly Blue fleck Power Worms. Again, this is a great place to use shiners and have seen many 10 pound plus bass taken from here. Golden Gate Canals When on Golden Gate Parkway (not Blvd) and you're going east, you'll pass a bridge and see a big field with many cars or trucks on the right. You'll also see a primitive boat ramp. Put your boat in there and go left from the boat ramp. You'll come to a big opening, try fishing the little lake, so to speak there, then try the canals. I have seen 10 pound plus bass taken from the little lake and canals both. Don't be surprised if you hook a nice tarpon or snook in the canals or lake, they are land locked and adapted to freshwater. Again, for the live bait fisherman, this a great for shiners. I have used a Berkley Blue Fleck Worm, white buzzbaits and spinners here with great success. Once you get to the main canal, you can go left again and go under the bridge and get to some good fishing where the canal bends about a mile from where you get in the main canal. It's pretty primitive out there with some nice fish. Be careful right before you get to the bridge as sometimes it gets pretty shallow there. So go Slow by the bridge. Seven Lakes If you take 75 towards the east coast of Florida and go through the toll-booth, the next exit is route 29. Once you get there, turn right. Go about a hundred yards and you'll see a fence with a dirt road. There are seven little lakes there and any of them are good fishing. The one I like best is the last one on the right. This again is great for shiners. I have caught bass on buzzbaits, spinners and Charlie's Twitchin shad there. I heard the state might have closed this down to public fishing but it's worth checking out just incase they haven't. Okeechobee What can you say about Okeechobee that hasn't been said? You have to try this huge lake. Shiners of course is the best bait but I had good look with Charlie's Twitchin Shad there and Zoom Lizards. I like the East end of the lake the best. Mile Marker 52 on 75 If you go toward the East coast on 75 from Naples, when you hit mile marker 75, you'll see an opening with a dirt road (pay attention or you'll miss it.), go down the dirt road and go under the bridge you just went over and launch your boat there. Once in the water, go left (South), you'll see a big sign that says "no tresspassing". This is Indian property. Go on down the canal, but DO NOT FOR ANY REASON go on the land. The Indians own the land but not the waterways. Start fishing on the left side of the canal. Try using a zoom Chartruese 6" Lizard. The water will be shallow at the edges but there is a shelf within a few feet that is like 10 foot deep. This is without a doubt one of the best places I have ever fished for bass. It's nothing to catch 20 bass a day here. I have one that is 6 1/2 pounds from here. I kept it because a gator decided he wanted it too. Oh yeah, that is another thing, there are thousands of gators in the canal here. This is my list of places to fish in Southwest Florida. Try them, I think you'll like them. Good Fishing To you! By Lance Winslow Freedom of Religion is something that we hold dear to our hearts as Americans. It is freedom from persecution and one of the reasons the Mayflower set sail to the New World. Freedom of Religion cannot be complete without freedom to worship no religion, to reject all other religions from ones belief system or to claim no higher power than self. The Atheists in America appear to simply be granted the same rights as those who chose to worship a God, or Gods, statue, energy, Sun, Alien or Force. If one worships nothing, no thing or refuses to find comfort in an invisible friend, companion or God, well then that must be allowed as well. You cannot have true religious freedom without granting the Atheists their worship of nothing or their belief that there is no God. If we attack those with a difference in view, we attack the individual and thus trample the rights of the few, which is not what our nation stands for. Indeed if we ridicule Atheists on Television and call them names, suggest they are any less ethical for their beliefs, then we do so at the peril of those individuals and the whole of our nation. In doing so we tear down the fiber of America and rip up our Constitution. Recently at a coffee shop I witnessed a heated debate between a strong non-denominational Christian and an Atheist as they debated away all points near and far on religion, God, who created the Universe and how come each individual was correct and the other entirely wrong. After the debate the Christian Gentleman, who I would give an A + for effort departed and I sat down and talked with the Atheist Gentleman, a scholar and an intellectual in his own right. Both men were far from incompetent and indeed the heated debate was worthy to watch in all its sound and fury. I indicated to the Atheist that I had enjoyed the Christians comments and the Atheist comments, as well. The Atheist said to me; Sometimes although I cringe when I do it, I often say I am agnostic just so I do not get the evil look? I can feel their anger and rage when I tell them I am an atheist, which is interesting because that is exactly opposite of what their religion is suppose to teach; hypocrites, just leave alone I think to myself. Indeed the Atheist did have a point and I had just witnessed a perfect example in the debate at the coffee shop. Ridiculous I thought to myself that one would have to tell a lie to keep peace, yet in some ways he was right and we both knew it. We discussed the issues of the Constitution, freedom of worship, freedom of speech, etc and it seemed to me that there is an inherent problem in the religious tolerance in the United States for those who do not think a certain way, maintain a specific belief system or hold the same God to their hearts. By Lance Cherry They say fishing calms the soul and refreshes the spirit. Certainly, one can find truth in this by spending a day on the San Juan River. Noted among the best tailwaters in the world, fly fishers annually trek across the globe just to throw a line in the 4.5 miles of quality water. Home to more than 80,000 trout, the San Juan is a place where 20 inch trout are abundant and your fishing skills are regularly tested. Its a place where big trout play the game to win. A place where tiny flies and fine tippets are king, skills a must and patience supreme. So you think you want to fish the San Juan? Nothing would be more tragic in my opinion, than to spend the countless hours gearing up and traveling to one of Gods greatest places on Earth, only to be skunked by the crafty competition. There is a way to improve your chances of success, but keep in mind there are no guarantees. THE RULES To better understand what you are facing, lets start with the rules. The rules provide the insight and guidance needed to unlock the secrets of the San Juan. Rules are the combination to the rivers secret lock. Turn the dial left stopping at #1, Catch-and-release. From Navajo Dam downstream 1/4 mile, these waters are catch-and-release only! This can be a harsh mental test as trophies abound everywhere, but you cant keep them. The fishermen on this stretch know what they are doing and many are masters of the sport. You must return the trout to the water immediately. Turn the dial right stopping at #2, Quality Catch. From the Catch-and-release area downstream 3.5 miles (Riverside boundary sign east of Crasher Hole Boat Ramp,) your dreams come true. You may keep 1 trout only that is a minimum of 20 inches. Yes, I said 20 inches. This is no joke and quit common. Fishermen keep one everyday, all year long. Many trophy trout have made there way from this stretch to the fireplace mantle. Still, the greatest joy will come from the same premise as the area before, catch-and-release. Monster after monster will provide enough challenge and joy, that keeping one will be the last thing on your mind. Finally, Turn the dial back left, stopping at #3, Bait Waters. From Riverside boundary sign east of Crasher Hole Boat Ramp, this section of the San Juan is affectionately know as the bait waters. Its fishing as usual here and traditional fishing methods are common. If youre lucky, and I mean real lucky, you could score a limit of monsters here. Chances are not likely though. Dont get me wrong. You will likely catch your limit. Just not 20 inch monsters. This section is regularly stocked by the New Mexico Game and Fish Department with catchable trout in the 8-10 inch range. So how do you catch the fish? Starting from the top, Catch-and-release, This is where the pros fish. I wouldnt even dare walking in there without a fly rod. Not that its against any rule, but because your dealing with a crowd of do-it-right anglers. These are the by the book because we wrote the book crowd. If I were fishing it and didnt have a fly rod, Id simply move on downstream or pick up a cheap one from an area shop. Set up with a long leader and tie two flies instead of one to increase your chances of scoring big. Keep your line tight and cast upstream, allowing your fly to float past you as it heads downstream. Remember, this isnt A River Runs Through It. Long artistic fly casts wont catch you any more fish and may just cause more agitation to the anglers around you. Some of the flies of choice here are: San Juan Style Nymph Rig, Wooley Buggers, stoneflies, mayflies, caddis and of course, my favorite, the San Juan Worm. In the spring, caddis and stoneflies hatch and often prove to be the best fly choice. Now for the Quality Catch area. You can always stick with the techniques above, but since most anglers are not pros and many dont own a fly rod, I will turn my focus to common spinner rods. First and foremost, find Texas hole. This is trout heaven. Hit the area hard with a spoons and single barbless hooks. Make sure to take a slew of spoons in hot colors like Orange, Yellow and Gold. Sometimes spotted spoons that look like little trout are necessary to do the trick. As for fishing; cast and reel, cast and reel. Vary your speeds and depths allowing the lure to work the fishs instincts. In time you will find your rhythm and discover a new skill. Another solid set up for your spinner rod, is to tie a fly on a leader 8-12 inches below a clear bubble. Monofilament 2 lb. test line is best, as trout tend to be easily stressed. Anything that looks odd, they avoid. Use the same flies as above and remember to study your hatch cycles. Finally, we hit the bait waters. This one is simple. Do as grandpa taught you to do and nothing more. Despite the popularity of Powerbaits and scented artificial lures, nothing says bite me like a big juicey night crawler. Worms, corn and salmon eggs are traditional baits and for good reason. They work. On the lure side, spinners like rooster tails are a basic must. When conditions are normal and stress is low, trout cant resist taking a nip at a feather-covered hook with a flashy spinner. When conditions are tough, I have learned the must have lure is a combination of one lure in two colors. A silver-colored and a gold-colored Super Duper should reside in every fishermans tackle box. When all else fails, the Super Duper delivers. When one color fails, the other delivers. FINAL THOUGHTS For my last few tips lets focus on behavior. Trout are cold-water fish. They hang out in the shade. Find the spots where a nice shadow is cast over the water and fish it hard. Second, trout are notorious for hiding behind objects. Sneak up on a big boulder and let your line float behind it or find a bridge, brush pile or tree that breaks the water. Be careful not to get to close. If a trout sees your shadow or reflection, they will be gone in a flash. Lastly, trout find the bulk of their food in the water. Salmon eggs, worms, bugs are the prime eats. Only about 10% of their diet actually consists of flying insects. When you pick you bait, keep this in mind. Now youre armed with the knowledge to take your crack at conquering the San Juan. For our purposes, we'll concentrate on the world of healing plants and leave the spiritual up to the individual. What is an herb? How is it different from a spice? An herb is a seed-producing plant of the type that does not develop persistent woody tissue, such as that of a shrub or a tree, but remains more or less soft or succulent (having thick or fleshy stems or leaves which can hold a large quantity of water). Some examples of common herbs would be catnip, chamomile, hyssop and spearmint. A spice is any of the various vegetable plants that are also fragrant or aromatic and are pungent to the taste. Allspice, cumin, paprika and rosemary are all spices. So an herb may also be a spice, like cinnamon or mace. Most herbs and spices are sun-dried or cured in their indigenous environment. For example, the ginger root is harvested then cleaned before it is dried and exported. Sometimes ginger root is also peeled and sometimes the ginger root is boiled in sugar and preserved before its exportation. Cloves are the dried unopened flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum, a tree of the Myrtle family, while peppercorns are the dried berries of the Piper nigrum plant. The nutmeg is the hard, aromatic seed of an evergreen tree called Myristica fragrans. The seed is dried and ground or grated and used as a spice. Herbs can act as astringents (something that slows or stops the flow of blood or other secretions), alkalinizers (something that raises the pH above 7.0), acidifiers (something that lowers the pH below 7.0), tonics (something that refreshes, invigorates or strengthens), diuretics (something that promotes the flow of urine), diaphoretics (something that promotes perspiration), laxatives (something that promotes bowel movements) and also as nervines (something which excites or relaxes the nerves). Many herbs act as more than one of these, such as Acacia, which has a soothing or softening effect on mucous membranes, an astringent effect, limiting secretions of glands and nutritive qualities as well as nourishing the tissues to which it is applied. The herbs with mostly astringent (causing blood or other secretions to slow or stop) effects are Acacia, Acorn, Agaric, Agrimony, English Alder, Amaranth, Trailing Arbutus, Balm, European Birch, Bistort, Blackberry, Black Willow Bark, Cinnamon, Black Cohosh, Eyebright, Fireweed, Fluellin, Houseleek, Jambul, Pilewort, Red Root, Red Sage, Peruvian Rhatany, Rhubarb, Rosemary and Scullcap. Herbs with a mostly alkalizing (raising the pH) effect are Dandelion and Kelp. The general tonic (nourishing, invigorating, strengthening or refreshing) herbs are Agrimony, English Alder, Alstonia Bark, Angustura, Asafetida, Balmony, Balm of Gilead, Bamboo Brier, Barberry, Berberis, Beth Root, Blackberry, Boneset, Box Leaves, Bugle, Catnip, Celery, Chamomile, Culver's Root, Dandelion, Eyebright, Gentian, Golden Seal, Juniper Berry, Lemon, Mistletoe, Nux Vomica, Peruvian Rhatany, Rosemary, Snake Root and Tansy. Herbal Tonics for specific areas are the Heart Tonics made from Butterbur and Mescal Buttons, Intestinal Tonics made from Cascara Sagrada, Nerve Tonics made from Damiana and Oats, Stomach Tonics made from Burdock and Sassafras, Strengthening Tonics made from Lucerne and Simaruba and Weight-adding Tonics made from Lucerne. The herb with a mostly diaphoretic (causing perspiration) effect is American Bittersweet. Many other herbs have this effect in addition to their main use. Herbs having a laxative (causing bowel movements) effect are Agar, American Black Alder, Asafetida, Ash, Asparagus, American Bearsfoot, Benne, Blue Flag, Boneset, Burdock, Cleavers, Culver's Root, Damiana, Dandelion, Fig, Hartstongue, Honeysuckle, Horehound, Olive, Pitcher Plant, Queen's Delight and Rhubarb which has the mildest laxative effect. Herbs that affect the nerves are Black Willow Bark, which eases inflammation of the nerves, Passion Flower, which eases nerve pain, Asafetida, which is a nerve stimulant, Gentian, which is another Nerve Tonic and Black Currant, which restores the nervous system. For nervous disorders, use Arrach, Belladonna, Caroba, Chamomile, Gelsemium, Gentian, Golden Seal, Kelp, Lobelia, Mistletoe, Muira-Puama, Oats, Passion Flower, Rosemary or Scullcap. Various parts of the herb are used - the flowers, leaves, buds, stems and also the root. Preparations vary as well. Sometimes the part or part used will be steeped and used as a tea, sometimes as a wash, sometimes as a tincture, where alcohol is the activating agent and other ways as well. Consult an herbal professional or documentation before using herbs. While most herbs are completely safe to use, some herbs are OK just in small doses, but sometimes harmful in larger doses.
